South Sudan is an east-central Africa country that became independent from Sudan in 2011 and has a population of 12.7 million.  South Sudan’s African cultures predominately adhere to Christian or animist beliefs (Animists believe that all things possess a spirit and free will – not necessarily involving a deity). The country’s diverse biosystems include lush savannas, swamplands, and rainforests that are home to many species of wildlife including lions, elephant and gazelles.  The White Nile River flows from south to north through the entire length of the country and includes a large swamp known as the Sudd.  Along the southern border with Uganda is a mountainous region that includes Mt Kinyeti.  South Sudan’s climate has a rainy season from April-November and temperature ranges vary from 20°-30°C (68°-86°F) in July to 23°-37°C (73°-98°F) in March.

South Sudan’s people are largely Nilotic that include a variety of ethnic, tribal and linguistic groups (70 languages spoken) and has one of the youngest populations in the world (18yrs old average age).  However, it is also one of the least developed countries in the world ranking second to last in Human Development Index and the fourth lowest GDP per capita.  The word “Sudan” is derived from the Arabic bilãd as-sudãn meaning “Land of the Blacks”.  This term was adopted by travelers and Arab traders passing through the region centuries ago.  British colonial influence favored Christian missionaries, which helped stave off the influence of Islam.  However, Britian put most of their efforts into developing the northern Arab regions and neglected the black African south, which continues to lack hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.  This has resulted in the rural economy relying on subsistence farming.  In recent years, the southern region around the capitol of Juba have initiated some urban development.

As of 2011, South Sudan was the worlds most underdeveloped country.  It exports timber and contains several natural resources such as petroleum, iron ore, copper, chromium, zinc, silver, gold, diamonds, hardwoods and hydropower.  The rural economy continues to rely on agriculture, but 90% of the country’s revenues are generated through oil exports.  More than 90% of the population live on less than $1 per day despite the overall GDP average of $1,200/yr ($3.29 USD per day).

Even though the White Nile River runs the length of the country, water becomes scarce during the dry season in areas away from the river.  Half of the population do not have access to an improved water source.  In areas where there are piped water sources, they are poorly maintained and are not safe for drinking.

South Sudan ranks highest in female illiteracy and maternal mortality (2%) with an infant mortality rate of 13.5%.  There are 8.3 million people in need of humanitarian aid, with only a handful of hospitals and surgeons in the entire country (typically one doctor for every 500,000 people).  HIV/AIDS rates are around 3% of the populations and Malaria rates are among the highest in the sub-Saharan Africa.  South Sudan is one of the few counties where dracunculiasis still occurs.

Please consider joining Missions Partners for Christ in providing a 4-day medical clinic for the unreached and underserved people of South Sudan.  We will serve together with our long-time missionary partner-CAPRO Calvary Ministries. We plan to serve an unreached people group in the Northwest. You can use your gifts, talents and resources to serve God’s people through this medical outreach. In so doing, you will strengthen your faith, meet some incredible people and maybe even witness God’s healing powers firsthand.

We desire medical professionals (physicians, physician associates, nurse practitioners, and nurses to join this team. Other positions are already filled. ***Space is limited so register today!
